Click here to access ACDS Summer Bloggers 2020 Kidblog page.

Logging In

Click on "Login" located in the upper right hand corner of the page

Click on "Select a name" and then select your name. Then
enter your password in the box below it and click on "Log In"

Navigating the ACDS Summer Bloggers 2020 Site

After logging in, when you click on your name in the upper right hand corner, you will have the option to select Dashboard, Profile, My Portfolio, and Log Out.

The "Profile" page is where you can change information about yourself including your Avatar,

The "Dashboard" is where you will find all the different blogs in which you belong. For most students it will likely only have the ACDS Summer Bloggers 2020 site listed. You can also click on the K in the upper left hand corner to access this page.

The "My Portfolio" page is where you can see all your own posts and comments to your posts.

From any page, you can click on "ACDS Summer Bloggers 2020" to access the main blog page where you will find:

A description of the summer Blog Requirements
All your teacher and classmate's posts (under posts)
All comments (under comments)
A list of all registered bloggers (under members)

The blog posts are in chronological order with the newest showing up first. You can click on a member's name to see just their posts.

Personalize Your Blog

You can personalize your Kidblog by selecting a new avatar and/or changing the theme. The video to the right will show you how.

Please note that even though it references "2016", the instructions are the same for "2020".

Creating a Blog Post

This video shows you how to create a new blog post including:

adding a header image
adding a title
adding blog text
how to change the way the text looks
changing the background color and texture
adding tags
selecting a category.

Blogging Netiquette

Netiquette is etiquette when you are online. Etiquette is another word for polite behavior. So Netiquette means how to be polite when you are online. The rules are the same if you're online or in-person. The thing to remember when you're online is - lots of people can read what you say. They read it immediately. People can share that information easily, so even if you fix or delete it, the damage may be permanent. Let's review the rules:

Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
Be nice. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything.
Don't say something online that you wouldn't say to someone's face. Remember there is a person on the other end of your message.
Don't embarrass anyone, get them in trouble, compromise their privacy, or stir up drama.
Reread your post and ask yourself "Can something I wrote be misinterpreted?" Printed text doesn't convey emotions, intentions, tone or body language, so it is easily misunderstood. Avoid sarcasm. Using emoticons can help.
Always remember to say"please" and "thank you" when soliciting help from your classmates.
Respect the opinion of your classmates. If you feel the need to disagree, do so respectfully and acknowledge the valid points in your classmate's argument. If you reply to a question from a classmate, make sure your answer is accurate!
Avoid typing in all capital letters. It can be interpreted as "YELLING".
Don't use inappropriate or offensive language.
If you're unhappy with something someone else wrote, consider talking to them in person about it. Could it be that they meant it a different way?
Be forgiving. If your classmate makes a mistake, don't badger him or her for it. Just let it go.

Tips on writing good comments

Here are some good tips on writing a good comment:

Start with a greeting.
Be nice. Compliment the writer in a specific way. Tell them what you liked about their post.
Make a connection - does their post remind you of something similar?
If you learned something new, tell them what you learned.
Ask a question
Add new information.
Make sure your comment is relevant and related to the post.
Check to make sure no one else has already written the same comment.
Don't reveal any personal information.
Use proper English - check for capitalization, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
Don't use too many exclamation points.

How to write a good blog post

1. Make It Interesting
Blogs are "public", meaning you are sharing your thoughts with others. If you want people to read your blogs then you need to make them interesting. You can do that by relating something personal, sharing your unique perspective, make it thought-provoking, making it emotional (funny, sad, etc.), add a photo or video, or show your creativity by creating a drawing, podcast or video to share. Remember to have fun with the blog!

2. Stick to one topic per blog post.
If you have multiple things to say on different topics, it's better to post multiple blogs rather than bounce around topics in one blog post.

3. Come up with a good Headline
The headline is the first thing people see. A good headline gives readers an idea of what your post is about and it entices them to want to read it.

4. Write Well
Blogs are not Text Messages. They are public messages, written to a large audience. It can sound casual, but it must be understandable. Here are some tips:

After you've written it, read your blog post out loud.
Make sure your blog post makes sense.
Check your spelling, capitalization, and grammar.

What is a blog?

This is the first entry of my "About blogging" blog. This entry is called "What is a blog"? A blog is a specific kind of webpage format. You can think of it as an "online journal". Just like a paper journal, you add entries in your journal chronologically. But unlike a journal where the oldest entry is first, an online journal shows you the newest entry first.

Why is that? It's because "journals" have been written as books which are read after they are completed and published. In that case you would want to read it from a historical perspective. A blog is designed to be read as blog entries are added. In this case, the format assumes you have already older blog posts, so they put the newest one front-and-center.

Unlike journals, blogs are multi-media. That means you can add text, photos and other images, audio, videos, documents, and hyperlinks!

Because Blogs are "online", other people can comment and ask questions. Because Blogs are interactive, a single entry can suddenly come to life and generate a lot of conversation. Even a simple blog entry like "There's nothing to do today. I'm bored." might generate a lot of ideas on fun things to do.

Fun Fact: Did you know the word Blog comes from combining the words Web and Log?
